OBLATE PREACHING MINISTRIES Serving Parish Renewal & Adult Faith Formation
PREACHERS OF THE WORD Ever needed! -- Always welcome?
From apostolic times preachers commissioned to proclaim the gospel have enriched the Church wherever they are welcomed. Since 1816 the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate have been dedicated to this ministry of renewal. Parishes that seek to become more vibrant expressions of Catholic life will welcome a straight-forward and engaging proclamation of the Word of God as an essential component of continuing conversion. Here is what Fr. George Knab, OMI offers.
PARISH MISSIONS These are four-to-five-day programs with the following themes:
Experience of Hope The basic good news of Jesus Christ. This mission includes a fresh proclamation of God’s love, healing prayer, a reconciliation service, Mass as the climax and exposition with benediction as the conclusion.
Call to Worship The Eucharist as Sacred Action and Sacred Presence. Unpacking the life-giving energy of the four parts of the Mass the mission is for parishes that want to renew themselves in the spirit of full, active, conscious participation in the liturgy.
Symphony of Faith The What and Why of Our Belief. Like the movements of a symphony there is a harmony among the four parts of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We believe in God, we celebrate the mystery of faith, we live in Christ, and we pray always.
Christ, the Lord of History Facing the Future without Fear. Placing our trust not in ourselves but in Christ we are free of the sins and failings of the past as we face the challenges of today confident of a future full of hope.
COMMON ELEMENTS OF EACH PARISH MISSION
EVANGELIZATION Using the Scriptures of the Sunday, the missionary preaches at each of the weekend Masses, calling the people to continuing conversion and urging them to invite inactive Catholics and others who are searching for God. Times for the Sacrament of Penance are announced.
PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE Each evening’s service is a liturgy that combines dynamic preaching, singing, praying and ritual. Mass is not included except when it is celebrated as the climax of the program.
SACRAMENT OF PENANCE One service is a penitential celebration in which priests are available for confession. The missionary hears confessions the following day each hour on the hour from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
MORNING SERVICES To complement the principal service, the missionary celebrates morning Mass followed by light refreshments and a short talk. Morning Prayer is said when Mass is part of the evening service.
VISITING THE HOME-BOUND The missionary devotes one day to visiting the shut-in. The visit includes Holy Communion and a blessing with the mission cross.
YOUTH The missionary is available to visit classrooms or speak at a special service.
MISSION COLLECTION A collection is taken to support the Oblate foreign missions. The parish may wish to supplement this with a donation. The parish provides accom-modations for the missionary and covers travel expenses.
SUPPORTIVE MATERIALS Outlines of the services along with instructions for musicians and other ministers are sent well in advance along with suggestions for prayer and publicity.
OTHER PROGRAMS
MARIAN RENEWAL This is a program of two to four days that promotes true devotion to Mary as a powerful aid to following Christ who leads us to God. It includes praying the rosary according to the suggestions made by Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter. As preparation for the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption it includes the vigil Mass.
PARISH RECONCILIATION Centered on the Sacrament of Penance this mini-renewal program includes invitational preaching at weekend Masses, and a homily at the parish reconciliation service. The missionary makes himself available to hear confessions in church on the following day An additional day may be devoted to the confessions of school children and/or the homebound.
ISAIAH MISSIONS The missionary collaborates with a lay presenter and together they work with a team of parishioners to conduct a mission that fosters ongoing transformation through positive preaching, faith-sharing, prayer, music and concern for the poor. Material for follow-up programs by the parish is offered.
C.F.C.A. WEEKENDS Parishes that wish to promote mission awareness and outreach to the poor will welcome Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, the largest Catholic sponsorship organization in the U.S. The missionary speaks on behalf of C.F.C.A. and invites people to sponsor a child or aged adult at a Catholic mission site in the developing world.
