Two New Oblate Deacons

The White Earth Reservation in Northwestern Minnesota was the scene of the September 6, 2002, diaconate ordination of Oblate scholastics Walter Butor and Jonathan Closner.  Bishop Victor Balke of the Diocese of Crookston, "with the laying on of hands and prayer," was the ordaining prelate.

Deacon Butor, a native of Pittsburgh, PA, has spent the past year in a pastoral internship with the Oblate community who minister in several parishes on the White Earth Reservation, located in northwestern Minnesota.  Oblate Fathers Ron Meyer and Mietek Bayek, along with Brother Bill Lundberg, make up the community.  Walter has returned to Chicago where he will complete his final year of theology at Catholic Theological Union.

Deacon Closner, who a week earlier had pronounced his final vows in his hometown of San Antonio, also has returned to Chicago and CTU for a final year of theological studies.  His pastoral internship was with the Oblates in the Philippines.
