Sakala and Closner Pronounce

Perpetual Vows

Scholastics Vincent Sakala (Zambian Delegation) and Jonathan Closner professed their final vows as Oblates of Mary Immaculate on August 31, 2002, in the chapel of Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio.  United States provincial, Fr. David Kalert, OMI, was the delegate of the Superior General to witness their vows.

Vincent, a member of the George Sexton House of Studies in San Antonio,  has begun his fourth semester of studies at Oblate School of Theology.  Prior to coming to the United States, he had been studying philosophy at St. Joseph Scholasticate in Cedara, South Africa.  He hopes to minister one day with the Oblates in his native Zambia.

Jonathan calls Oblate House of Theology in Chicago "home."  He will enter his final year of studies at  Catholic Theological Union in the Windy City.  In June, he returned from a nine month pastoral internship with the Oblates in Manila, the capital of the Philippine Islands.   Since San Antonio is Jonathan's hometown, there were many family and friends to witness his vows.

About forty professed Oblates formed a semi-circle around Jonathan and Vincent as they made their life-long commitment to religious life as Oblates.  The body of the OST chapel was filled with family and friends, including a good number of students from the theology school itself.  The choir was a group of young adults from Brownsville, TX, who call themselves "Agua Viva" or "Living Water."
