POINTS TO PONDER

On April 8, 2003, The Brownsville (TX) Herald published the following letter to the editor from Fr. Armand Mathew, OMI.

Points to ponder:

  • “Violence and arms can never resolve the problems of men.” – Pope John Paul II, March 21, 2003.

  • “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” – Dwight David Eisenhower, April 16, 1953.

  • “To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” – Theodore Roosevelt, 1918.

  • Paraphrasing the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, America will do more for humanity and a peaceful and safe world for everyone by building strong alliances than by exercising power in relative isolation.

  • Killing innocent children, women and men is killing innocent children, women and men.  Calling it “collateral damage” does not change that.

  • Premature loss of human life is always tragic.  Combatant/non-combatant, our side/their side are not the relevant issues.

  • Continued opposition to the war we are in does not equate with lack of support for our troops, the White House and the Pentagon to the contrary notwithstanding.

  • Expressed sadness and concern and even disgust over how we got into this war does not equate with a lack of patriotism, the White House and the Pentagon to the contrary notwithstanding.
