On Saturday,
January 24, 2004, Most Rev. Allen Vigneron, Bishop of Oakland, California,
ordained to the priesthood Father Salvador Gonzalez, OMI. The ordination
took place at Sacred Heart Parish in Oakland where Father Thomas Hayes, OMI,
is the pastor.
The newly
ordained Father Chava was born into the large family of Salvador and Carmen
Gonzalez in Puente Grande, Jalisco, Mexico, in 1971. When he was just two
years old, his family moved to Oakland where they were, for many years,
members of St. Mary’s Parish, at that time in the hands of the Oblates. The
family has since moved to Modesto, CA.
Father Chava
made his pre-novitiate experience in Tijuana, B.C., Mexico. After that, he
entered the novitiate in Godfrey, IL. After his first profession of vows in
1998, he spent a year at the George Sexton House of Studies in San Antonio
before receiving an assignment to continue his studies in Rome, Italy. He
graduated from the Pontifical Urbanianum College in the spring of 2003.
For his
pastoral year, he is ministering at Nuestra Señora del Carmen Parish in
Lowell, MA, where the pastor if Father Jim Taggart, OMI.
Father Chava
has not yet received word of his “first obedience” from the Superior
General.
