Salvador Gonzalez, OMI, Ordained a Priest

On Saturday, January 24, 2004, Most Rev. Allen Vigneron, Bishop of Oakland, California, ordained to the priesthood Father Salvador Gonzalez, OMI.  The ordination took place at Sacred Heart Parish in Oakland where Father Thomas Hayes, OMI, is the pastor.

The newly ordained Father Chava was born into the large family of Salvador and Carmen Gonzalez in Puente Grande, Jalisco, Mexico, in 1971.  When he was just two years old, his family moved to Oakland where they were, for many years, members of St. Mary’s Parish, at that time in the hands of the Oblates.  The family has since moved to Modesto, CA.

Father Chava made his pre-novitiate experience in Tijuana, B.C., Mexico.  After that, he entered the novitiate in Godfrey, IL.  After his first profession of vows in 1998, he spent a year at the George Sexton House of Studies in San Antonio before receiving an assignment to continue his studies in Rome, Italy.  He graduated from the Pontifical Urbanianum College in the spring of 2003.

For his pastoral year, he is ministering at Nuestra Señora del Carmen Parish in Lowell, MA, where the pastor if Father Jim Taggart, OMI.

Father Chava has not yet received word of his “first obedience” from the Superior General.
