In the third chapter of the Book
of Ecclesiastes, we have that famous poem about time: "There is an appointed
time for everything...a time to build and a time to tear down..."
That reality of tearing down is
coming to pass for a structure that has been the home of many generations of
Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The wreckers have begun the demolition
of the former Oblate College at 391 Michigan Ave, NE, in Washington, DC.
Having served for many decades as
a house of formation for Oblates and a theology faculty for other students, in
recent years, with the inauguration of the new U.S. Province, "391" housed
various province offices and offered hospitality to Oblates coming to D.C. on
provincial business.
Structural damage due to
underground subsidence and other economic issues led the Provincial Council to decide
that rather than update and remodel the old building for future use, it
would be better to simply demolish it and build a new residence for the
Provincial Administration and other Oblate staff that work in Washington, as
well as for guests.
Thus, the wreckers are at work,
first totally gutting the interior before taking down the outer shell .
