Fr. Tony Rigoli: New Orleans Update 11/17/05

Fr. Tony Rigoli, OMI, sent this November 16 update on the situation of the Oblate Parish in New Orleans, as they continue to recover from hurricane Katrina.

Hi,

Just to let you know what is happening in the recovery phase here at Our Lady of Guadalupe in New Orleans.

The immediate needs for those returning to the City are housing, clothes and food. Our St. Jude Community Center is trying to meet all of those needs. We have clothes available as well as food and now we are opening a part-time shelter for those returning who are in need of temporary housing. Many residents come back with no place to stay while trying to find a permanent home. The Center provides them a place to stay for a few days. Beds were provided by the City Mission and bedding was provided by other shelters in the city that are unable to re-open at this time.  The Center is in need of blankets, pillows, towels and sheets.

Things are busy as more people return to the City. Yesterday, in the news, it was stated that prior to Katrina, 470,000 people resided in the City proper. Today there are 100,000.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is full on Sunday with 5 weekend Masses. We are full with people from all over the City because 40 Catholic Churches were closed due to damage or no people living in their neighborhoods.

The faith is strong here and we will rise again. I will say that I will take a good old-fashioned Buffalo Blizzard any day.
