September 4 Update

New Orleans Oblates and Katrina

A number of friends and former parishioners of the Oblates working in New Orleans have written e-mails through the webmaster and through the provincial office, asking how they might contact the Oblates who have evacuated New Orleans or how they might help.

Fr. Sal DeGeorge, OMI, currently from Houston, drove to New Orleans early Friday morning and was able to get into the French Quarter to bring some family members and friends from the besieged city to Houston.  In Sal’s words, “The Big Easy is bent and bloodied but, if you talk to the Quarter folks, unbowed.”  There was no flood water in the Quarter (where St. Jude Shrine is located) but there were many trees down.

Frs. Mike Amesse and Tony Rigoli and Bro. Porfirio Garcia are staying at the Christian Renewal Center in  Dickinson, outside of Houston.  Fr. Frank Montalbano is staying at Madonna Residence in San Antonio.   The Landry’s, long-time Oblate friends, are also at the CRC.  Fr. Sal’s family are staying with other family members in the Houston area.

Many have inquired how they can help financially in this tragic situation.  We are asking people who are interested in financial donations to help the Oblates of St. Jude Shrine help victims of the disaster to contribute through either the Oblates' Missionary Association in Belleville IL (www.oblatesusa.org; 888-330-6264) or Oblate Missions in San Antonio TX (www.oblatemissions.org; 210-736-1685).
