Oblate Preachers Gather in San Antonio

Those of us involved in fulltime preaching ministry have been meeting annually to do what we can to improve ourselves for the work of this ministry so dear to the Oblates.

This year we met at the oblate Renewal Center in San Antonio from June 5 – 9. We spent the first day calling ourselves to have a greater impact on the world in which we live. A concrete proposal emerged from this first day which we hope to present to the Provincial administration in the immediate future.

The second and third days of our time together we invited a guest speaker, Father James Bacik, a priest of the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio to speak to us. Fr. Bacik is a theologian, a pastor of Corpus Christi parish in Toledo and a campus minister at the University of Toledo. He recently published a new book on preaching by Paulist Press entitled: “A Light Unto My Path”.

During our time together, Father Bacik proceeded to give us insights into preaching in the Church today based on his experience, his theological expertise and a personal poll of people across the United States. He was truly challenging and inspirational in the way that he presented his material without ever using a prepared note to keep him focused. Instead, he presented his ideas in a way that truly kept us attentive and called us always to be more. He was truly a remarkable speaker and a gift to us and to the Church. It was a week well-spent.
