“Every place is missionary,”said Cardinal George, who belongs to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), a congregation that began in France to re-energize the Catholic Church after it was largely destroyed during the French Revolution. The congregation’s first focus was home missions, but within a few decades, Oblates began to reach out globally to places that had never had a church—or at least had never had a self-sustaining one.
